December 12 and 13, 1931: Mary Lehman’s funeral and Christie’s R.C.A. radio

December 12, 1931

Mr. and Mrs. Jno Korting and myself were to Mary Lehman’s funeral. We had so many clothes on we could hardly pack them. It was cold going 20 miles to Helena.

Rob O’Connell was up to hear Christie’s R.C.A. radio. Markie Ledbetter[1. I believe she is referring to George Marcus Ledbetter, son of David Ledbetter and Edith (Schenk) Ledbetter. Edith was a sister to Mary’s first husband, George Schenk.] sang over K.F.B.B., Gt. Falls, a bunch of “Love Letters.” They are now playing “Kiss me Good-Nite.” He’s a cousin to Christie Schenck. Pallbearers for Mrs. M. Lehman were Dan Derosier, August Summers, Morgan Langon, Mike Touy, Will Fletcher, Geo. Kockler.

NOTES

On this day in 1931: a sad and difficult day

December 5, 1931

“Love”, I sure cried to-day for the want of it. I never got any from my parents (none of us children did, at that Will was the favorite). I got so much of it from my children and my heart overflows for Love of them, of course my bonds for kindness was lost at times, but I ment it for there good. Husbands Love? I got very little there, as the innocent true Love I craved for wasn’t taken and returned in the same way.[1. Just a few days before Mary wrote this entry in her journal, she applied for aid from the American Red Cross (which provided assistance during the Depression). Late 1931 seems to have have been a particularly difficult time for her.] M.G.S.[2. Mary sometimes added her initials to a journal entry.]
