I sure enjoyed some nice skating down on the old mill dam where I skated 36 yrs. ago.

Christie took a load of [illegible] & bedding & went up to Friday Gulch to work on the Shakopee mine[1. According to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, the Shakopee is “located in the northwest quarter of section 4, T11N, R6 W, the mine was apparently worked with the Towsley mine and was located to the east of the Earthquake mine. The Shakopee was developed by a 50 foot incline shaft with a drift on the bottom. The ore shoot worked on the mine varied in thickness from one to six feet. No production figures are available (McClernan 1983).”].  Ralph Williams went down around the Penobscot way.  The road thro the timber was good, little snow.

Had a heavy flurry of snow. Ben Atwater died of heart failure.

I did a little research in Ancestry regarding Ben Atwater and came cross a very interesting article from The Helena Independent dated October 22, 1939 about his wife, Dr. Mary B. Atwater. The article also offers information which possibly explains how Mary might have known this couple, or at least Dr. Atwater. Continue reading →

Still nice weather, no snow.

In her last journal entry of December 25th, Mary mentioned that it had been the “grandest fall & winter” she had ever seen. But have no fear, snowy Montana weather is on the way!
