February 22, 1931: A dance on George Washington’s birthday and a trip to Towsley

Journal #1, February 22, 1931

There’s a dance in town for Geo Washington’s birthday. I am going to Towsley with Alb[ert] Tomorrow. Cid was up the 21st & I wasn’t home. Fran & Cid came up for the dance, it was rotten, too many booze fighters. I came home.

February 12, 1931: A trip to Helena with the Kortings and Joe Color

Journal #1, February 12, 1931

Lincoln’s Birthday. I went to Helena with Mr. and Mrs. Jno Korting[1. John and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Korting were good friends of Mary’s. He was about 58 and she was about 52 in 1931.] and Joe Color the driver.[2. I found a 17 year old in the 1930 census by the name of “Joseph Colar”. He was the oldest of four children and his parents were Bertha and Michael Colar.] On the way the snow a ft deep came in up under the car and they had to stop twice and dry it out. Then Mr. Korting put a rag around the coils, it got twisted and tightened in some other plan[?] then they felt the car wasn’t just rite then they had to stop a long time and pull the tangled rag out. No one had a knife so I gave them a small finger knife I had. So after we got going Joe Color said to me “did you get your little thing?” I picked it up & he forgot it until we were going. I was in to see Cousin Kate[3. Mary’s brother John Joseph Rumping was married to his first cousin Kate Specht Haag, which meant that Mary and Kate were sisters-in-law, as well as cousins.] and she was very bad.[4.Sadly, “Cousin Kate” died about a month after this journal entry on March 12, 1931.] Kortings were going to bring there son Ernest home who was operated on 2 wks ago for hernia.

February 9 and 10, 1931: A couple of late nights for Mary

It took me awhile to prepare this post, primarily due to all the detail in the February 10th journal entry. And I admit to spending more time than probably necessary trying to find just the right images and just the right information to fill in the blanks. I feel a bit like I’ve been time traveling with my great grandparents. And I am grateful – all over again – for the gift of her journals.

February 9, 1931

It’s storming fierce out, large flakes but it’s warm out. 11-15 p.m. o’clock Tuesday. The little yellow canaries[1. Mary raised yellow canaries.] sung at 4 wks old. Continue reading
