Ride with Lizzie, Mother’s Day, Shirley’s recital, Black Cat

black-woman-girl-thinking-white-cartoon-writingEntries from Journal #1: May 1930

May 1 – Mrs. Lizzie Korting and myself rode down to the cyanite and then walked up on the opposite side of the hill on [illegible] 1930.  The Herman Weinsitter boulivard.  It was made by him for pass time, he is well to-do.

May 11 – Mother’s day – Cid, Fran, Shirley & Buddie Dalin1, Bro. Wm. Rumping were up, had a nice time, went down the ridge bee hunting.  Cid & Fran went up to Erick Hedblom at Belmont (electric station [illegible]).   After dinner Mrs. Lizzie Korting & I went down to Mother Setzer walking over the hill part way.  I got a nice box of candy & necklace from Fran & Cid.  A nice card & box of candy from Evely[n] & Fred Marks.  A nice card & box candy from Irene & Jno Webber.  The 2 youngest daughters at Hannibal, Mo.   2 nice t bone steaks from Alb.  Nothing from Christie and I sure wonder why & it hurts, I say (Mother).  I am so lonesome for my nice black kitten Albert made me take away.  He was a loving cat.

May 23 – Mrs. Marq. Hedbloom & myself were at Frances (Mrs. Dalin).  She was all unreasonable, out of sorts, let us feel we fell in her way, in fact told us so.  I’ll go in June for Shirley’s sake but not Fran’s.  I sure can’t understand her emotions to me at times.  Fran chastised Shirley for making the same remarks to us she did herself.  Shirley did grand at her five page recital at Mrs. Luby’s studio on the piano in Helena.  Larson’s Geo, and Jno L Sullivan spoke fine of her.

May 30 – My black cat came back home.

1.  Cid, Fran, Shirley & Buddie Dalin.  Mary’s daughter Georgiana Frances (aka “Georgie”, “Fran” or “Frances”) and her family.

On this day in 1930 – Fishing without a license, Prairie Club

black-woman-girl-thinking-white-cartoon-writingEntry from Journal #1: July 4, 1930

A. Schaffer, Wm Rumping, Miss May Iverson, went up to the Shokipee mine, and myself.  I caught my first fish to-day and sure put it in my pocket as I had no license.  A party of people of the Prairie Club are spending the summer in Marysville staying at the Drum Lummond Hotel.

Entries from Journal #1: June 1930

June 1 – Mr. & Mrs. Jno [John] Korting & myself were at the Marlow to see Winnie Lightner & Polly Moran play “She Couldn’t Say No”[1].  It was a good show.

June 6 – “Flag Day” – Frank Risoni’s playing at the Fox Liberty Thea[tre].  National Anthem march from Gt. Falls over the radio.  Yesterday was a fierce windy day.

June 15 – I went 61 miles with Mr. & Mrs. Erik Hedblom up to Gould, Empire, Towsley & home by the Shannon mine.  I finished painting the front of the house & fixed it up real nice.

June 19 – I was to Helena.

June 20 – Had the first rain since spring.

June 22 – Mr. Alb. Price came over at 2:30 a.m. with a severe nose bleed.  Alb[ert] Schaffer & H. Ingman took him to Helena.

[1] I think the movie she meant is “The Girl Said No”.  Click here for more information.

And so that you have an idea of the type of movies someone like Mary would have seen in 1930, here’s a short clip from YouTube –
