I was talking to a friend a few days ago about my blog and how I was mostly posting the journal entries from Journal #1 on the same day that Mary wrote them. In other words, if Mary’s journal entry was dated September 8, 1930, I posted that entry on September 8, 2015. Well, it seemed like a great idea at the time. But it now occurs to me that it will take many years to get through that journal, let alone the other two journals, if I stay the course. So, I’ve decided to drop that idea — and just get posting!
So here’s the next entry in Journal #1.
Entry from Journal #1: September 14, 1930
We saw Let’s Be Gay – Sure good. Mrs. Korting & I were down to see Mrs. Setzer, who is sick.
1. Let’s Be Gay. The correct name of the movie is Let Us Be Gay. A pre-code comedy drama, it was directed by Robert Z. Leonard and starred Norma Shearer. Here’s a clip from YouTube:
2. Mrs. Korting. Mrs. Korting must have been a neighbor and friend of Mary’s as she is mentioned several times in her journal. Here is a picture from 1948 of Mary with several friends, including Mrs. Korting (4th from the left, back row).
And here is the photo back, with all the women identified.
A transcription of the photo back:
Marysville, Mont
1948-5-5
Mrs. Mary Riordan
” Bessie Lunstrum
” Ann Babb
” Lizzie Korting
Back row
Mrs. Haltermann[?]
” Carrie Ross
” Daisy Hendricks
front row
Mrs. Theresa Bunphry[?] played also with us*
*I would guess “played also with us” is a reference to the card game – bridge – which I know Mary played regularly with several neighbors.
3. Mrs. Setzer. I did a basic search in Ancestry but was unable to locate anything definitive.
